Situation overview
More than 10,000 people were displaced in the Segou and Mopti regions further to an inter-community conflict recorded in February 2017 in the administrative districts of Macina and Niono (Segou region). These new displacements increase the number of displaced people registered in the country due to the 2012 conflict and other inter-community clashes in northern (Menaka, Timbuktu) and central (Mopti) Mali to 45,766 people.
The Segou region now hosts the largest number of internally displaced people (IDPs) in the country while around 23 humanitarian organizations have an operational presence in this area. An emergency response is ongoing to meet the most urgent needs of these new IDPs, in terms of food, protection, non-food items and water and hygiene.
