In 2016, more than 690,000 people were newly displaced across Iraq; around 318,000 people remain displaced along the Mosul corridor where fighting has intensified over the last months. At the end of the year, over 121,000 people were living in displacement as a result of the Mosul conflict; 85 per cent of whom were staying in emergency sites and camps supported by the Government and humanitarian partners. Although efforts were made to improve conditions in emergency sites, the cold weather significantly affected families at the sites, particularly those with young children and elderly people. With fighting intensifying in eastern Mosul city, a corresponding increase in displacement and trauma cases has been recorded. The number of trauma cases in and coming out of eastern Mosul city remains a significant humanitarian concern. The distribution of food and the restoration of water services are also priority humanitarian activities in eastern Mosul city.
