Summary

The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is seeking a Taxonomy & Content Manager (consultancy) to join their newly formed Shared Digital Services (SDS) team within the Information Services Branch (ISB). OCHA currently maintains multiple web-based platforms that are used in humanitarian response. This position will encompass working on SDS-lead projects, collaborating on joint projects with other teams, and occasionally supporting other OCHA properties in the realm of taxonomy design, consolidation, technical service, and both defining and implementing a distributed content management strategy.

We are looking for a highly organized and passionate individual who would like to use their skills to help humanitarian response around the world.

Ideally, the consultant would be New York based for the initial phase of the contract. Since SDS is largely a distributed team it is expected that this position would transition to being home-based.

Key Responsibilities

Deliverables

  • Consolidation of key taxonomies, through collaboration with distributed key stakeholders, to define a canonical source of said taxonomy;
  • Define and implement a (distributed) content management strategy for each taxonomy;
  • Create categorization rules for new taxonomy terms as well as maintains and improves categorization rules for existing terms;
  • Regularly review content for possible gaps in coverage, identifying new terms, synonyms, and term relationships;
  • Support the definition of technical and user requirements for micro-services that will serve these taxonomies to humanitarian partners via an Application Programme Interface (API);
  • Undertake testing and reviews of technological implementations for Taxonomy services;
  • Collaborate with the SDS Communication Officer to develop a communication strategy around taxonomies and their governance (both internally and externally facing);
  • Participate and collaborate with the Humanitarian Exchange Working Group;
  • Data Analysis of user interaction and server logs from our various platforms;
  • Surge into joint projects with other teams to provide support;
  • Support user research and testing; write up findings for review by the full team and integration into future development;
  • Represent SDS at meetings and events globally with presentations, demonstrations and through panel discussions;
  • Participate in team meetings and in team forums as required;
  • Generate analytical reports on categorization, search, and related user behavior.
    Education/Experience/Language requirements

Education:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in library science, data analytics / statistics, computer science, information systems, information technology or other related fields. A high school diploma, or equivalent, with four years of extra work experience would be accepted in lieu of a bachelor's degree.

Required Experience:

  • 2 years of experience in taxonomy, controlled vocabulary, and metadata development;
  • Understanding of taxonomy best practices and standards;
  • Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail;
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills;
  • Very high attention to detail;
  • Comfortable working with large data sets, for general review and for analytical purposes;
  • Excellent understanding of modern accessibility and usability techniques;
  • Exceptional communication skills;
  • Experience in the humanitarian sector;

Desired Experience:

  • Experience doing user research and usability testing;
  • Data Analytics / Statistical work

Language:

  • Fluency in English is required. A second UN language (French, Spanish, Arabic, Russian, Chinese) would be an asset.
